The Mokha Center for Strategic Studies, in collaboration with Taiz University, recently held a symposium focused on the Houthi group’s efforts to revive the Hashemite Imamate project and its implications for Yemeni society. Attendees included academics and students, along with the university’s vice president, Dr. Riyadh Al-Aqab, and the dean of the Faculty of Arts, Dr. Yahya Al-Madhaji.
During the event, participants reviewed a study from the Mokha Center titled: The Houthi Project to Revive the Imamate and Change Identity. The study analyzed the methods the Houthis have employed to reinstate the Imamate system since their takeover of the country in 2015, utilizing insights from five key Houthi documents.
Speakers like Dr. Najib Abdul Qader and Dr. Amin Mahyoub discussed the historical context of the Hashemite Imamate, which was overthrown during the September 26, 1962, revolution. The discussions highlighted recent attempts of the Houthis to revive this project and examined its effects on national identity and stability in Yemen.
The symposium further explored how the Houthis are taking advantage of Yemen’s fragile economic and political situation to strengthen their sectarian and religious influence.
